Course Outline
AI Fundamentals
Course Description
This workshop grounds you in the fundamentals of AI: what the technology actually is, how it works, and what the jargon around it means.
From there, it teaches two skills: prompt engineering — writing effective prompts using a clear structure (task, context, format, tone) and a set of proven techniques — and context engineering: giving the AI the right information, at the right time, in the right format.
You'll apply both to real tasks: drafting, editing, and summarizing your own writing, using AI as a thinking partner, and building a personal prompt library you can reuse.
Then you'll go further: chaining prompts for multi-step work, running long structured sessions, catching AI when it's confidently wrong, and applying clear ethical guidelines — spotting bias, protecting private information, and knowing where AI shouldn't be trusted on its own.
By the end, you'll know exactly what you're doing with AI, and why it works. That's a skill most people who use AI never actually learn.
No coding or technical background required.
Learning Objectives
- Lesson 1
Introduction
- Explain what generative AI is and how it differs from a search engine
- Get an overview of the AI assistant landscape
- Set up and navigate either Claude or ChatGPT
- Start and continue a conversation with an AI assistant
- Describe what a prompt and context are in their own words
- Lesson 2
Prompt and Context
- Identify the elements of an effective prompt (Task, Context, Format, Tone)
- Rewrite a weak prompt using those elements to get a better result
- Apply at least two prompting techniques (e.g. Zero-Shot, Few-Shot, Constraint) in a live exercise
- Describe the key sources of context an AI model draws on (prompt, knowledge, tools, memory, instructions)
- Refine an AI response through follow-up and iteration
- Lesson 3
Applications
- Ask AI to explain a topic or concept and go deeper through follow-ups
- Use AI to draft, edit, summarize, and rewrite written content
- Generate and evaluate ideas using AI as a thinking partner
- Apply AI to a real personal or work task from start to usable output
- Build a prompt library of reusable prompts
- Lesson 4
Advanced Techniques
- Apply advanced prompting techniques (prompt chaining, self-consistency, tree-of-thought)
- Set up a productive long-form AI session using a briefing prompt
- Manage context and recognize the limits of the context window
- Identify the dangers of AI and how to guard against them
- Apply ethical guidelines when using AI responsibly
